RULE OF LAWAMICUS

FIGHTING F.B.I. RETRIBUTION

Doe v. Patel // Garman v. Patel
DATE FILED: August 3, 2026
Former senior Justice Department officials are helping to challenge the politically motivated firings of FBI agents.

THE IMPACT

If the Trump administration’s political purges of FBI agents go unchallenged, a half-century of Justice Department independence will be undermined and any remaining insulation from partisan interference will be at grave risk.

THE BRIEFS

Following Watergate, Congress implemented reforms to protect the Department of Justice (D.O.J.) from political interference, ensuring that law enforcement decisions are guided by the rule of law rather than partisan interests.

In the fall of 2025, the Trump administration publicly fired dozens of agents solely because they worked on investigations into President Trump – marking a major assault on post-Watergate regulations.

Our amicus briefs leverage the unique perspective of bipartisan former D.O.J. officials to support the fired agents in their legal challenges. The officialswho have decades of experience working closely with FBI agents, argue, “Defendants’ actions constitute a direct attack against our justice system’s hard-earned, bedrock tenet that federal law enforcement must be freed to do its work insulated from partisan political interference.”

THE TEAM

The bipartisan former Justice Department officials are represented pro bono by Free + Fair and Gilbert Employment Law.
